Department Summary

The College of Health and Public Service (HPS) at the University of North Texas, distinguished as one of the few Tier One research universities designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), prepares graduates to address complex social issues such as aging, disability, disaster management and recovery, criminal justice, health disparities, and public safety, and find solutions to challenges in public administration, public health, and urban design. We have seven academic departments with undergraduate and graduate programs, the Center for Public Management, the UNT Speech and Hearing Center, UNT Workplace Inclusion & Sustainable Employment (WISE) and a number of professional development and clinical training programs to facilitate careers to address a global society.

HPS students are trained to lead nonprofits, become educators, researchers and professionals who strengthen the communities we serve as audiologists, behavior analysts, city managers, emergency managers, health care administrators, public safety administrators, public health specialists, rehabilitation counselors, speech-language pathologists, social workers, urban planners and more.

Located within HPS, the Department of Emergency Management & Disaster Science (EMDS) offers the nation’s first bachelor’s degree program in Emergency Administration and Planning and a master’s degree in Emergency Management and Disaster Science. With eight faculty and one staff member, the department aims to advance disaster science and practice through high quality collaborative research, an evidence-based curriculum, and meaningful engagement with the scholarly and practitioner communities.

UNT has a highly diverse campus with a wide range of languages spoken in addition to English. We welcome candidates who have experience with HSI/MSIs and/or who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, American Sign Language, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin and other variations), Arabic, Tagalog, Farsi, French, or/and Yoruba.

Position Overview

EMDS seeks an outstanding, collegial, and energetic full-time lecturer with expertise in emergency management and disaster science to begin in Fall 2024 on the Denton, Texas, campus. Area of research expertise is open. This is a professional-track, one-year appointment that will be reviewed annually with possibility of renewal. Teaching responsibilities will include graduate and undergraduate level courses. We seek candidates interested in teaching undergraduate courses such as Exploring Disasters, Principles of Emergency Management, Methods in Emergency Management, Social Vulnerability, and Terrorism and Homeland Security. Candidates will also have the opportunity to develop and teach graduate-level seminars in their area of expertise. Ability to teach in-person and online is required. Ideally, the candidate will also be able to assist the department in expanding their online course offerings. The candidate selected for this position will be expected to engage in high-quality and innovative instruction in both traditional and non-traditional formats; serve as appropriate on department, college, and university committees as well as participate in professional organizations.

Minimum Qualifications

• Candidates should have a Doctoral Degree in emergency management and disaster science; or in another related discipline such as geography, sociology, anthropology, urban planning, environmental science, or risk communication.
• Candidates who are ABD will be considered, but the position requires completion of all doctoral requirements by Aug. 31, 2024.
• Evidence of previous teaching experience and the ability to teach in traditional and non-traditional formats and settings (on-campus, off-campus, evenings, online).

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience working in emergency management or related research experience.
