Position Overview
The Skellam lab is seeking a highly motivated and collaborative Postdoctoral Research Associate with skills and experience in natural products chemistry. Our lab investigates and engineers natural product biosynthesis in microorganisms and plants that have applications in drug discovery and agriculture. The ideal candidate will have experience identifying, isolating, and structurally characterizing a diverse range of natural products from plants and / or fungal sources including developing methods to elucidate minor components of a mixture. In-depth experience with a range of NMR and MS-based techniques is essential and a good understanding of primary and secondary metabolic pathways is preferred. Further responsibilities include the day-to-day management of the project, manuscript and proposal writing, presenting original research internally and externally at meetings and conferences, and mentoring students at the undergraduate and graduate level.
Minimum Qualifications
• The candidate should have completed their PhD in chemistry or a related field and have experience and interest in biotechnological production of natural products
• Broad experience with small molecule isolation and structural elucidation using HPLC, LCMS, 1D NMR and 2D NMR techniques
• Skilled in structural elucidation using MS/MS data from metabolomics experiments
• Ability to work independently planning experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and preparing summaries to share with the larger team
Preferred Qualifications
• Knowledge of secondary metabolism in fungi and plants
• Experience with molecular biology techniques such as gene cloning, plasmid construction, PCR, RT-PCR, and genome mining
• Experience with agrobacterium-mediated transformation
• Good interpersonal skills and a team-working attitude
• Interest in training and mentoring students
Required License/Registration/Certifications
Job Duties:
- Conduct experiments, gather data, document research notes, code and analyze data, interpret data
- Prepare manuscripts for publications in a timely manner and talks and posters for presentation at group meetings and conferences. Assist with reporting of research progress to funding agencies.
- Keep up with historical and latest research data and publications
- Train students and other junior colleagues
- Stay up-to-date with all trainings, and federal, state, university and department requirements
