Department Summary

The TRIO Programs at the University of North Texas at Dallas were designed to support the academic development of students within our partner schools of Dallas ISD and surrounding school districts. Upward Bound – Targeted Academic and Social/ Emotional support for High School Students currently residing in Low Social Economic areas with low Post-baccalaureate Completion Rates. Additionally, the student attend schools with High Drop Out and Low College Going Rates. The TRIO Programs at UNT Dallas will be integral partners with our Partner School Districts by providing services to their underserved students of promise with intentional programs that support the holistic development of their students. The goal is to provide a vision, framework and detailed plan for each student to successfully attain a High School Diploma and Collegiate Degree in order to become active participants of our society.

Position Overview

The TRIO UB Tutor Counselors will work with certified instructors in academic areas and full-time TRIO UB Staff, assisting in leading/chaperoning students during academic enrichment, career connectedness, and social activities. Approximately 60 students from area high schools will be housed on the UNTD campus where they will be exposed to a college and residential living experience. Tutor Counselors will be responsible for chaperoning students on a 24-hour basis from Sunday evening through Friday afternoon throughout the duration Upward Bound Summer Program.
Multiple positions are open for dynamic, versatile, and committed individuals to join our team for the TRIO UB Summer Residential program at UNTD. The 6-week position includes 1 training week, and 6 weeks of 24 hr. supervision of up to 60 high school youth in a residential setting within an academic and recreational pre-college program.

Minimum Qualifications

Current college/university student or recent graduate.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Sensitivity to student needs and the ability to relate to students, parents, faculty and staff, and the public.
  • Ability to direct and coordinate various activities for program participants.
  • Strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
  • Physical and emotional ability to work long and irregular hours, occasionally involving interrupted sleep.
  • Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.
  • Excellent customer service skills, as well as effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office computer applications (i.e. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Some knowledge of office practices and procedures.
  • Demonstrated ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions accurately.
  • Good interpersonal skills and ease in relating to people from varying educational, cultural and social backgrounds.
  • Ability to learn assigned tasks readily, to adhere to prescribed routines, and to develop some skill in the operation of common office equipment.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

 

Job Duties

  • The 6-week position includes training and 6 weeks of 24 hr. supervision of up to 60 high school youth in a residential setting within an academic and recreational pre-college program. 
  • Actively work with staff in implementation, supervision, and support of youth in all phases of programming activities.
  • Assist Instructors in daytime classes. 
  • Tutor and supervise 10-12 students during tutoring/class sessions. Student mentoring.
  • Plan/supervise recreational activities and field trips. Supervise and maintain order among youth at all times.
  • Attend all staff meetings and maintain records.
  • Develop and implement programming for youth as a workshop coordinator/leader. Provide a pleasant, comfortable atmosphere conducive to maximum student growth. Interpret and enforce compliance of rules and regulations of students as per TRIO and Institutional policies. 
  • Assure that dormitory discipline and related matters are handled in a fair and consistent manner. Assist students from Sunday evening until Friday afternoon during the residential program. 
  • Prepare and lead enrichment activities as assigned. Keep and prepare reports and records as assigned by the Upward Bound Manager. Verify with staff members in regard to students’ paperwork before calling parents/guardians, administering medication, allowing visitors, and taking photos of students. Alert all staff members of any/all emergencies and/or urgent matters. 
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Lifting and Moving objects up to 20 pounds.
  • Sedentary work that primarily involves sitting/standing.

  • No adverse environmental conditions expected.
