Department Summary

The College of Health and Public Service (HPS) at the University of North Texas, distinguished as one of the few Tier One research universities designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), prepares graduates to address diverse and complex social issues such as aging, disability, disaster management and recovery, criminal justice, health disparities, and public safety, and find solutions to challenges in public administration, public health, and urban design. We have seven academic departments with undergraduate and graduate programs, the Center for Public Management, the UNT Speech and Hearing Center, the UNT Work Inclusion and Supported Employment (UNT WISE) program, and a number of professional development and clinical training programs to facilitate careers to address a global society.

HPS students are trained to lead nonprofits, become educators, researchers and professionals who strengthen the diverse communities we serve, with thoughtful, inclusive, and equitable practices as audiologists, behavior analysts, city managers, emergency managers, health care administrators, public safety administrators, public health specialists, rehabilitation counselors, speech language pathologists, social workers, urban planners, and more.

UNT ELEVAR (Empower, Learn, Excel, enVision, Advance, Rise) is a four-year inclusive postsecondary education program for students with intellectual disabilities (ID). Following the definition of the program’s name, ELEVAR [lift, soar, rise, in Spanish], the program’s vision is to empower young adults with ID who wish to continue postsecondary education (PSE) to become self-determined, independent, and healthy adults readied for integrated competitive employment.

Position Overview

The UNT ELEVAR Program Champion serves as a full-time representative of the ELEVAR Program—an inclusive postsecondary education program supporting students with intellectual disability. The ELEVAR Program Champion serves as a mentor and role model for ELEVAR students, supports the development of a strong campus and community presence through outreach and engagement activities, and assists in donor relations and fundraising initiatives. This role requires good interpersonal communication, self-advocacy, and a deep commitment to inclusive higher education.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in related field and one year of professional related experience in coordinating or administering higher education programming or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

• Ability to prioritize multiple ongoing responsibilities.
• Strong organizational skills.
• Proficiency in MS Office.
• Strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
• Experience working with individuals with disabilities
• Good interpersonal and communication skills
• Passion for inclusive education and supporting students with intellectual disability.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with inclusive postsecondary education (IPSE) programs or transition services.
• Knowledge of disability advocacy, universal design, or person-centered planning.
• Familiarity with UNT systems, departments, and community engagement initiatives.

Required License/Registration/Certifications

• Recent graduate of the UNT ELEVAR Program (UNT ELEVAR Career Certificate)

Job Duties:

  • Student Mentorship & Support: Provide academic, social, and career guidance to ELEVAR students and facilitate their inclusion in campus and community life. 
  • Program Coordination: Organize and support small group activities, workshops, and events that promote student engagement and self-advocacy. 
  • Peer & Staff Collaboration: Coordinate with staff, peer allies, and departments to ensure a student-centered, inclusive experience. 
  • Community Outreach: Represent the ELEVAR Program at public events, school fairs, and conferences to raise awareness and share impact. 
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build relationships with families, schools, partners, and university departments to support program growth and visibility. 
  • Presentation & Advocacy: Deliver presentations and share student success stories to promote ELEVAR’s mission and impact. 
  • Donor & Fundraising Support: Assist in donor stewardship, including events, storytelling, recognition materials, and reporting outcomes. 
  • Administrative Support: Maintain accurate records, prepare reports, and contribute to internal communications and social media content. 
  • Program Development: Participate in strategic planning, team meetings, and continuous improvement efforts. 

Physical Requirements:

Lifting and Moving objects up to 20 pounds.
Communicating with others to exchange information.

Work Schedule:

Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with flexibility to work some evenings, weekends, and ability to travel.
