Department Summary

The Department of Information Science is part of the University of North Texas (UNT), which is ranked a Tier One university by the Carnegie Classification. The University offers 114 bachelor’s, 87 master’s, and 39 doctoral degree programs, many nationally and internationally recognized. Degree programs in the Department of Information Science include an undergraduate program in information science, masters programs in information science, health informatics, and library science and a PhD program in interdisciplinary information science, as well as several non-degree certificates. The Department of Information Science, one of four departments in the College of Information, promotes the understanding of, access to, and use of data and information through teaching, research and service activities. The Department prepares information professionals of the highest quality to serve in dynamic roles locally, nationally, and globally. Faculty members measure their success by scholarly activities and the quality of their students’ intellectual contributions to the profession and society. The American Library Association has accredited the Department’s master’s programs in Library Science and Information Science continuously since 1965. The Department offers one bachelor’s degrees, three master’s degrees, graduate academic certificates, post-master’s certificates, and a doctoral degree in Information Science. Our master programs are nationally recognized.

The faculty in the Department of Information Science have historically and consistently brought an interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary/transdisciplinary approach to their teaching and scholarship.

Position Overview

The Department of Information Science at the University of North Texas (UNT) invites applications for tenure-track Assistant positions in Health Informatics. We are seeking excellent candidates with a background in current or emerging areas of health informatics and/or health information systems. Some areas of interest are clinical informatics, bioinformatics, imaging informatics, and AI-driven medical systems.

The successful candidate is expected to teach undergraduate as well as graduate (master’s and doctoral) courses, conduct collaborative, interdisciplinary research, and provide service in an academic position with emphasis in Health Informatics. The candidate must demonstrate a record of research accomplishments and be able to design and deliver courses in a variety of formats, including online and hybrid modalities. They are expected to work closely with doctoral students and to serve on dissertation committees. A demonstrated history of obtaining research grants is considered a plus.

This is a nine month, full-time, tenure-track position. We seek candidates who can leverage the strengths of the department’s dynamic faculty and programs, and who will build collaborative relationships within the University and its system as well as the profession.


Minimum Qualifications

The minimum requirement is an earned doctorate in Health Informatics, Information Science, or other related fields at the time of appointment.

Preferred Qualifications

Preference will be given to candidates who have evidence of effective teaching, research (including external funding), and scholarship in Health Informatics or health information related areas. Previous experience in health-related settings is preferred.
