Department Summary

Risk Management Services' programs provide proactive support for the strategic, operational and financial foundation of the University of North Texas. A safe academic environment is the top priority of our department and staff members. We help identify, analyze and mitigate risks so that the UNT community can freely pursue opportunities for growth and advancement. Our staff members also work to identify, protect and conserve university resources from loss. To achieve our goals, we work together with the UNT community to help them proactively manage risks, implement preventative measures, plan for their challenges and work through any issues that occur.

Position Overview

This position is responsible for the oversight and management of the university's chemical hygiene and hazardous materials programs. The Chemical Hygiene Officer will provide leadership and participate with all levels of the campus organization to develop and implement appropriate policies and practices while continually evaluating established procedures for compliance with federal, state, and local requirements. This role will provide subject matter expertise in chemical hygiene and hazardous materials management both in a laboratory setting and as it applies to the greater university campus. As such, the Chemical Hygiene Officer is responsible for educating and training the campus community while interfacing with federal, state, and local regulatory agencies in representation of the University of North Texas.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in chemistry or related chemical science and 4 years' of associated experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work effectively in a professionally diverse community. Ability to lead and manage multiple operations; ability to manage a variety of tasks simultaneously. Act as the primary point of contact for regulatory agencies and auditors to resolve issues and represent the institution in a positive manner. Knowledge of the fundamentals and principles of both chemistry and environmental, health, and safety (EHS) and communicate on critical technical and administrative topics with all levels of the campus organization. Proven experience managing and leading programs across varied functional groups and collaborating with critical stakeholders for process development and enhancement. Skilled in the use of computers and technology associated with environmental and hazardous materials work. Preferred: Masters or Ph. D in chemistry and 7 years of associated experience. Possession of professional certification/credentials, preferably a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) and/or Certified Chemical Hygiene Officer (CCHO).

Required License/Registration/Certifications

 

Job Duties:

  • Manages all aspects of the Chemical Hygiene Program including regulatory compliance, inspections, reporting, CHP maintenance, and development of applicable plans and procedures 
  • Manages all aspects of the Hazard Communication Program including regulatory compliance, reporting, Hazard Communication Plan maintenance, and development of applicable plans and procedures. 
  • Manages all aspects of the hazardous materials program including regulatory compliance, inspections, plan maintenance, and development of applicable plans and procedures. 
  • Manages all aspects of chemical inventory compliance including DHS Chemicals of Interest, state and federal Controlled Substance Program, and Tier II reporting 
  • Manages all aspects of other EHS programs assigned. 
  • Develop and administer training programs related to chemical safety, laboratory safety, and hazardous materials management.
  • Provides active support to other group members as a subject matter expert. 
  • Ensures clear lines of communication exist and coordination occurs with appropriate internal and external customers and partners
  • Fosters a positive work environment focused on teamwork, collaboration, professionalism, and mutual respect and support. 
  • Maintains open lines of communication with departmental leadership. Continually evaluates assigned operations, identifies challenges, develops solutions, monitors progress, and reports as appropriate to ensure deadlines and standards are met. 
  • Leads, manages and provides oversight of day-to-day work tasks, projects, and initiatives under the CHOs purview. Assesses the quality of delivered services and work completed to ensure high standards of performance are met.

  • Demonstrates good listening, speaking and writing skills. Communicates honestly, openly and respectfully.
