Department Summary

The mission of the Department of Hospitality and Tourism Management is to educate the next generation of hospitality and tourism leaders who strive for excellence and embrace innovation within a caring and empowering community. The program offers a Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management in Denton and Frisco, a Bachelor of Science in Event Design and Experience Management in Denton and Frisco, a Master of Science in Hospitality Management, a Master of Science in International Sustainable Tourism.

UNT has a highly diverse campus with a wide range of languages spoken in addition to English. We welcome candidates who have experience with HSI/MSIs and/or who speak Spanish, Vietnamese, American Sign Language, Chinese (Cantonese, Mandarin and other variations), Arabic, Tagalog, Farsi, French, or/and Yoruba.

Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated, experienced faculty member to join our team and help shape the next generation of food and beverage professionals and hospitality leaders. This 9-month, full-time position plays a pivotal role in delivering high-impact instruction in restaurant operations through our student-operated restaurant, the Club at Gateway, beginning Fall 2026 and beyond.

This position offers a unique opportunity to impart your extensive culinary knowledge, passion, and industry experience in restaurant operations with enthusiastic students, preparing them for successful careers in the hospitality industry. The faculty member is responsible for overseeing student learning in back-of-the-house (BOH) operations at the Club at Gateway, our student-operated restaurant.

The new hire will implement innovative teaching methods to ensure that students understand standards of excellence in food production, culinary techniques, food safety, cost control, kitchen operations, new technologies, and management practices. Candidates will need to be prepared to address their teaching philosophy in terms of communication, as it relates to student interaction.

The faculty member is responsible for course instruction primarily HMGT 3251 Restaurant Operations, and other courses as assigned for a 4/4 workload. The faculty may be required to travel off campus to monitor students and/or teach classes at lab sites in Frisco, TX.

The faculty member is responsible for activities that involve collaboration with other departments and college faculty and staff, especially in a coordinated effort. While the primary focus of this position is BOH instruction, the faculty member may be asked to support Front-of-House (FOH) instruction and operations as needed. The faculty member is expected to work collaboratively with the FOH instructor to ensure students experience the full coordination of kitchen production, dining room service, guest experience, and restaurant management.

The faculty member will manage and support scheduling, food ordering, inventory management, cost control, safe food handling, special events, promotion and ticket sales, money handling, and financial statements related to restaurant operations. The faculty member will provide course instruction and monitor teaching and learning effectiveness. This includes preparation of course materials, assignments, syllabi, attendance records, grading, curriculum revisions, and textbook selection and supplies.

The faculty member is expected to participate in college and campus events, serve on academic or administrative committees, and support recruitment efforts.

Minimum Qualifications

A Bachelor’s degree in culinary, hospitality, food science or other related field with substantial years of industry experience.

- Back of house experience including food prep, cooking, plating, or kitchen support
- Front of house experience including guest service, hosting, serving, or bar service
