Department Summary

The Institute for Health Disparities (IHD) conducts research, training and community
outreach in the areas of minority health, health disparities and workforce variety.
Constituting the IHD are the Texas Center for Health Disparities, National Research
Mentoring Network, Texas CEAL Consortium, HRSA, Training Programs, AIM-AHEAD and the NIMHD Endowment.

Position Overview

The Institute for Health Disparities (IHD) at the University of North Texas Health Science Center (HSC) is seeking a motivated Postdoctoral Research Associate with expertise in cancer prevention, cancer therapy, Artificial Intelligence & Machine Learning (AI/ML), data science, or related fields. The role focuses on applying advanced biomedical, translational, and computational methods to address public health challenges and promote health outcomes. The Postdoctoral Research Associate will collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to develop advanced tools and data solutions aligned with IHD’s mission of advancing research, workforce development, and community engagement.

Doctoral degree. If not yet conferred, a letter from the school's official Graduate Office and/or Registrar's Office certifying that all requirements have been met and stating the degree conferral date can be accepted. Employees in this job may be responsible for conducting research on, working on, or having the ability to access critical organizational infrastructure and they must be able to maintain the security and integrity of the infrastructure related to this role.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Design, implement, and evaluate AI-enabled tools, software applications, data pipelines, and digital platforms that support research, education, training, and community-focused initiatives
  • Experience with programming languages, machine learning frameworks, and familiarity with computing in the cloud/on HPC
  • Strong data visualization and communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Experience with interdisciplinary or collaborative research environments
  • Experience publishing in peer-reviewed journals or presenting at conferences
  • Familiarity with STEMM, public health, or health disparities research (or related fields)
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in dynamic research settings
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills

Job Duties

  • Develop and apply research methodology including biomedical, AI/ML, data science, and digital technologies to advance IHD’s mission across research, workforce development, and community engagement.
  • Analyze and interpret complex datasets using statistical, computational, and machine learning methods, and communicate findings through reports, dashboards, visualizations, and presentations. 
  • Prepare manuscripts, participate in grant proposals, technical reports, educational materials, and presentations for scientific, professional, and community audiences/stakeholders.
  • Support and train students, trainees, and other audiences in AI, data science, and computational methods through mentorship, technical instruction, and hands-on learning experiences that contribute to workforce development. 
  • Stay current with emerging trends and scientific literature, contribute to strategic initiatives by identifying emerging technologies, support proposal development, and help translate innovative ideas into impactful programs, products, or services.
  • Collaborate with faculty, students, community partners, healthcare organizations, industry, and other stakeholders to develop innovative solutions, foster partnerships, and support interdisciplinary initiatives.
