The HSC Community Garden was founded by HSC Sustainability in 2014 and continues to be managed through Facilities Management.
Position Overview
We are seeking an hourly, part-time Community Garden Administrative Associate to help in assisting with the maintenance of the HSC Community Garden. The HSC Community Garden was founded in 2014 and includes 35 plots, compost bins, a tool shed, common growing areas, and fruit trees. The plots are tended by community members, staff, and students, and the garden collaborates with community partners and on-campus organizations.
This position is a part-time non-benefits eligible position.
Minimum Qualifications
- Gardening experience including organic gardening and pest management knowledge.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Good communication skills.
- The ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds and bend to garden.
Preferred Qualifications
- Completion through a Master Gardener Program
- Experience working or volunteering in a community garden.
- Experience with hosting events.

Job Duties:
- Communicates directly with the gardeners about issues, concerns, general questions, etc., answers general inquiries about the garden from both our campus and external communities, and orients new gardeners and volunteers.
- Updates community garden files and logs.
- Assists in organizing and conducting special garden activities like planting days, harvests, and garden maintenance events.
- Organizes and supervises volunteers.
- Collaborates with other departments and organizations both on and off campus as it aligns with the mission and purpose of the garden.
- Performs general routine maintenance of the garden such as picking up trash, picking weeds, gardening abandoned or empty plots until a new gardener can be assigned, maintaining common areas and the compost bins, and organizing the tool shed.
- Conducts routine inspections of the garden and plots and works to resolve issues.
Work Schedule:
- Flexible; up to 19 hours per week (no weekly minimum)
- Must be able to work occasionally on Saturday mornings (2-3 per year)
